No one wants to find their vehicle missing because a thief stole it while you’re away. Older models are at higher risk because they lack the anti-theft devices we take for granted today. While most vehicles employ multiple security devices, it never hurts to add one or two of your own.
A kill switch can help protect your vehicle from car thieves. It prevents most thieves from driving off with your car. There are several types of kill switches available, so you can choose the one that fits your unique application.
What Is the Kill Switch in a Car?

A car kill switch is a manually or electronically operated mechanism designed to prevent a vehicle from starting or remaining operational. The system works by interrupting either the electrical current or fuel supply necessary for the engine to run.
Some are installed intentionally by owners as anti-theft devices. Others are integrated into modern connected-car systems or installed by lenders and dealerships as part of financing agreements.
The simplest type is a battery or master disconnect switch, which physically cuts the main electrical connection between the battery and the vehicle. These systems are commonly attached to the negative battery terminal and prevent any electrical components, including the starter, from receiving power.
More targeted systems interrupt the ignition or starter circuit itself. These starter-interrupt devices prevent the starter solenoid from engaging when the driver turns the key or presses the ignition button. In those cases, the vehicle may appear powered on, but the engine will not crank.
Other systems focus on the fuel supply instead of the electrical system. Fuel-pump interrupt devices allow the engine to turn over normally but prevent fuel from reaching the injectors. Modern versions increasingly rely on GPS and cellular connectivity.
Electronic and GPS-based disabling systems can remotely prevent a vehicle from starting by integrating with the car’s computer network or starter relay. These systems are commonly associated with connected-car services and subprime auto financing agreements.
5 Types of Kill Switches
Fuel system relay switches interrupt the fuel from reaching the engine. There are also simple-to-use battery disconnect switches. Or an even more advanced system is to use a remote car battery disconnect switch, an ignition wire kill switch, or a fuse box kill switch.
Here’s an in-depth list of the types of kill switches you might want to consider for your car:
#1. Fuel System Relay Switch.
The fuel system relay kill switch disables the engine’s fuel supply. They’re small, easily installed, and easy to hide and use.
Most fuel system relay kill switches are on/off toggles in the positive circuit of the fuel part. You can hide the switch in any location. However, you must connect the switch to the electrical wiring. Recommended locations include under one of the seats, inside the glovebox, beneath the dashboard, and in the trunk.
Some fuel kill switches disable the fuel pump that transports gasoline or diesel to the engine. Others turn off the fuel injection system that sprays the fuel in the cylinder. Their methods differ, but the result is the same.
#2. Battery Disconnect Switch.
The battery disconnect kill switch cuts off electrical power from the car battery, de-energizing your vehicle. While more complex than its fuel system relay counterpart, this type also immobilizes your vehicle more thoroughly.
When set in the off position, the kill switch disconnects the car battery’s circuit. It de-energizes your vehicle, turning off electrical devices that run on battery power. One of the affected parts is the ignition system that starts the vehicle.
Unfortunately, the battery disconnect kill switch also resets electronics that draw power from the car battery when the engine isn’t running. Devices like the clock and radio might reset to factory baseline and clear their memory. You’ll have to re-enter the correct settings.
But here’s a solution to that problem:
There are heavy-duty relays that can be used for this, and they can be wired to interrupt the main battery wire where it goes to the starter. The only problem with this is that some cars use the main starter post as a junction and have fusible links feeding other things connected to it, so you may kill the other things.
If, however, you mount the heavy-duty relay close enough to the starter, you can transfer the fusible links with their lugs to the large always-hot battery hot post on the heavy-duty relay.
You can install the battery disconnect kill switch on the positive battery cable. In many setups, the kill switch goes under the hood. Alternatively, extend the positive battery cable until it reaches the driver’s seat, where you can install the switch. If you extend the cable, use a 0-gauge cable and a heavy-duty rotary switch.
#3. Remote Car Battery Kill Switch.
Another type of kill switch, also installed at the battery, is the remote-controlled variety. You can keep the remote with your keys. What is nice about this option is you can activate it any time you feel nervous about suspicious activity taking place, even if you aren’t with your vehicle.
The switch is installed at the battery the same as any other kill switch and using magnets, activates your ability to use the battery whenever you want to drive, and turns it off when you are protecting your vehicle.
However, you are going to experience the same memory issues that were previous to this type of battery killing option.
#4. Ignition Wire Kill Switch.
As there is no ignition system running right, you cannot start the car. With an Ignition Wire Kill Switch, you interrupt the ignition flow to cause a break in the ignition wiring. You will need to cut the ignition wire and put a connector on either side and connect each to the switch.
Then you can decide where to route the switch itself in the cabin, perhaps somewhere that can not be seen.
This may be a little more complicated as having to cut a wire, and if you are not already familiar with your ignition system, make sure you look at the diagram in your service manual. The key is to cut the correct wire, and you may also prefer soldering for a better connection.
#5. Fuse Box Kill Switch.
While this kill switch will stop power getting to the car, it does not stop it with the battery. Instead, it stops power right at the fuse box.
Of course, you can just pull the ignition fuse out and put it back in when you come back to drive your vehicle. But that seems like too much work, especially if the fuse box is hard to reach.
It makes a lot more sense to install a switch that kills specific fuses. You would simply run a wire to the fuses you want to kill. Then properly install the switch in an inconspicuous place.
Pull the Fuel Pump Relay
Instead of installing a kill switch, you can remove the fuel pump relay from the main fuse box. This relay is the electromagnetic switch that controls the current flow to the fuel pump. Removing it deprives the fuel pump of power.
Modern vehicles keep their fuel pump relay in a relay block. You can find the relay block in either the engine compartment or under the rear seat.
Kill Switch Cost
Typically, a vehicle kill switch costs between $10 and $100, including both the item and the installation. Of course, this will really be dependent on what type you get, what kind of vehicle you have, and whether you are doing the work yourself or if you’re having it professionally installed.
When you think about the low cost of a kill switch, it’s really a no-brainer, especially if you live or work in an area where there is a lot of vehicle theft.
For less than $100, you can prevent your car from being stolen which is not only a hassle but can also cause your insurance rates to jump quite a bit.
An automotive kill switch is definitely better than putting one of those ugly steering wheel locks on or having to deal with a million false alerts from car alarms.
When you install a kill switch in the right location, either inside or outside of the vehicle, you greatly minimize your chances of it being stolen. It’s sometimes quite inexpensive to install, especially if you can DIY it. Of course, you will need some basic automotive electrical skills.
No system is foolproof, but adding a car kill switch as an extra layer of security will at least give you more peace of mind when you park your car in high-crime areas, or when it is unattended for long periods of time.

How to Install a Car Kill Switch [Stop Theft in 8 Steps]

Step 1: Choose a Location for the Switch
Choose a location that is discreet but still accessible to the authorized driver. Common locations include under the dashboard, inside the glove compartment, near the center console, or under the driver’s seat.
The location should not be obvious to someone unfamiliar with the vehicle. At the same time, it should not interfere with pedals, steering, airbags, seat movement, or normal driving.
Step 2: Disconnect the Battery
Before working on the electrical system, disconnect the negative battery terminal. This helps reduce the risk of accidental short circuits while you work on wiring.
